The day five professionals stopped staying quiet

The inaugural TM MEDIA public Speak Up Masterclass in presentation and media interview skills was a huge success, thanks to the five brave professional women who walked in not knowing anyone or quite what to expect, and quickly formed a supportive group, bringing out the best in each other to present and shine a light on their work and research.

This testimonial from Gillian Witham – a senior financial advisor with 5 Financial – sums up her roller-coaster experience.

“On the last day of the financial year, I traded my desk for a camera.

A media and presentation skills masterclass with Theresa Miller of TM MEDIA.

Speaking up in public is scary. It fills most of us with so much dread that we'd rather avoid it at any cost. But that's exactly the skill I wanted to work on, because the cost of staying quiet is real. All the study, the years of experience, the hard work we've poured into our fields, and yet we don't know how to articulate it clearly when someone asks.

The ah-ha moment for me was when Theresa explained that an elevator pitch isn't about what you do. It's about how what you do helps someone else. Not the features. The benefit. Because if you stay quiet, no one will ever know you could be exactly the person who solves their problem.

So, together with four other incredibly impressive professional women, masterfully guided by Theresa, we let ourselves be a little vulnerable. We faced the fear of the camera and started practising how to express what we do, in a room that felt safe, supportive and encouraging. What struck me was that every one of us clearly knew our field inside out, and every one of us still had moments of doubt about whether we deserved to be the one speaking up for it.

Jessica Whyte, Shona Dutton, Fiona Jefferies and Kim Hamrosi joined me for the day, and watching each of them find their footing, nerves and all, was wonderful. Thanks to all of you for the support and for making the day great fun.

Public Speaking Lessons Quote: I learned that if something goes pear-shaped during a presentation, it's best to laugh it off and move on quickly.

Thank you, Theresa for the safe space, the honest feedback, and for guiding us so generously with your years of experience and skill.”
